"I love taking someone with very limited knowledge of the outdoors or the river and help them to realize that it is not something to be afraid of but it is a connection to embrace."
Scott Berry
Bear Paw Partner - Head of Instruction
A native of Marquette , Michigan , Scott has been a Wolf River resident since 1990. A graduate of Northern Michigan University with a degree in Outdoor Recreation, there he worked and directed the Outdoor Recreation Center . He has guided many backpacking, skiing and kayaking trips and has been a sought after instructor for 16 years. Scott is an avid whitewater kayaker, and when watching him you can tell he is at one with the river. He loves to teach outdoor activities because he likes to associate with those that have the same love of the outdoors that he has. He enjoys helping others learn, and in that process, he learns from them, symbiotically. His students say “I feel safe with Scott, and his gentle reassuring demeanor helped me overcome my hesitancy to try new things”. Scott lives in nearby White Lake with spouse Chris, he also has a son Jake who is also a very talented kayaker and is attending UW Stevens Point.
Craig Knapp
Bear Paw Partner-Resident Best Boy
Craig first came to Bear Paw 2 years ago taking classes to increase his skills in whitewater paddling. He would come up several times over the course of the summers, taking many classes and finding anyway to get on the river. Lucky for us he happened to be at Bear Paw the day of the tornado and he hasn’t left. Craig worked every day to clean up, and give positive encouragement for rebuilding. He never let up. Some days he picked up glass all day when no one else could stomach being on site. Other days, he burned huge wood debris piles or chipped wood. His home town is Hoffman Estates , Illinois , but we are hoping he will make it Langlade. He is a retired stage hand, and was very instrumental in creating the Kayak Tree. He is looking forward to summer 2008 to get on the river with all the folks who helped with the clean-up.
